Organic Vegetable Farming

The Need

Vegetable farming is one of the main sources of income for local farmers of Kg. Rampai Besar, Sikuati. However, the traditional use and dependance on pesticides and herbicides are still practiced. These chemicals come at a significant cost. Pesticides have polluted almost every part of our environment. Pesticide residues are found in soil and air, on and in ground water. Pesticide contamination poses significant risks to the environment and non-target organisms ranging from beneficial soil microorganisms, to insects, plants, fish, and birds. Contrary to common misconceptions, even herbicides can cause harm to the environment.

Our Involvement

BEST Society obtained a grant through SHELL Malaysia- Sustainable Development Grants Award 2015 and have worked with 10 families on a small-scale organic agriculture farm. The farmers went through a couple of programs on organic farming and entrepreneurial skills. These programs combined gave the farmers the tools and knowledge to farm better and to be more resourceful with their crops and harvest. Through the grant, BEST was able to support the farmers in land preparation, setting up a basic irrigation system, purchasing equipment and organic fertilizers.
