Jaini or more fondly known as Jamil by his peers, was born and raised in Sukau Village, Kinabatangan. Jamil who comes from a humble family and community joined Sukau Rainforest Lodge (SRL) in 1995 and is still with the lodge until present. He is considered as one of the longest serving employees in SRL, who has grown together with and contributed to much of the lodge’s growth through the many years. When Jamil first joined SRL, he did not know how to speak in English but made it a point to learn the language in order to communicate better with the guests at the lodge. Jamil has seen many roles within the lodge, but he always tackles his assignments with dedication and a smile. He is well trained in operations, service, and enjoys meeting guests from around the world.
Being part of Sukau Rainforest Lodge has taught Jamil to take up new challenges, and in 2001, he further polished his skills and knowledge by attending a Nature Guide Course organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. The course was sponsored by Borneo Eco Tours. Upon completing the course, Jamil became more confident in giving nature interpretations to guests as well as speaking the English language. Coupled with his passion for nature and wildlife in Kinabatangan, Jamil became a professional in nature guiding in Kinabatangan and has received praise by guests for his ability to spot wildlife as well as his interpretation about them.
Currently, Jamil is the Field Supervisor at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. His responsibility includes ensuring technical equipment including the boats are in good condition as well as supervising the general workers at the lodge. From time to time, Jamil still does nature guiding during river cruises for guests and is especially applauded for his skills and knowledge during night cruises, where he can easily spot wildlife even at night.
As part of Sukau Rainforest Lodge’s 25th Anniversary, we would like to take this opportunity to recognise Jamil Ahmad’s contribution towards the community and environment in Sukau for the past 25 years. For his many years of involvement, we are dedicating a room at the Sukau Ecotourism Research Centre (SERC) to Jamil Ahmad.
