BEST Society organised the Bamboo Hut Competition in partnership with MUKEST and Borneo Eco Tours to nurture an emerging industry developing sustainable building products and crafts from bamboo as an alternative of income generation activities.

Kiulu Bamboo Huts

The Need

Bamboo is abundant in Kiulu and have an important role to play in development. It is an excellent resource to build a variety of income and employment-generating opportunities. If managed well, it can be of economic importance with its multiple uses and high value in a range of products.

Our Involvement

We initiated the commercialisation of bamboo in early 2018 by bringing in an expert from Bali to Ulu Kiulu for villagers to learn more about the fundamentals of bamboo craftsmanship. In April of the same year, BEST Society organised the Bamboo Hut Competition in partnership with MUKEST and Borneo Eco Tours to nurture an emerging industry developing sustainable building products and crafts from bamboo as an alternative of income generation activities. The competition brought together 5 participants from different villages showing off their skills to improve the aesthetic beauty of Kiulu Valley through the use of bamboo, revitalize and bring profitable returns of the traditional and sustainable use of bamboo through the promotion of creativity and innovative use of this incredible ‘miracle plant'.

The Impact

With our support, the winning bamboo huts are now market-ready community product promoted through Borneo Eco Tours- Kiulu Bamboo Village Stay. Through this, we hope to support local economies by diversifying their source of income through tourism.
