About SERC

Sukau Ecotourism Research Centre (SERC) is established with the aim to advocate and promote responsible and sustainable practices in businesses and the communities around Kinabatangan. This is done through the researches that it facilitates, which in turn will positively impact the communities, businesses and the environment there.

SERC was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, YB Datuk Christina Liew on the 28th June 2019. The centre provides avenue for ecotourism research with 3 twin-sharing bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 toilets, workstation, kitchen, laundry and common area.

What is BLC?
(Borneo Land Conservancy)

The Borneo Land Conservancy, known simply as BLC, is a parcel of land BEST Society had purchased back in 2017. The purpose was solely for land conservation as much of the surrounding land is taken over by development, logging and palm oil plantations. BEST Society had went a step further to extend our conservation efforts by setting up a research centre for students and researchers to facilitate studies on the importance of habitat preservation on the effects of ecotourism. The research centre known as the Sukau Ecotourism Research Centre (SERC) sits on the 7.7 acre strip of land.

Covering over 30,000 ha, the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the floodplains of Kinabatangan and is renowned for its rich biodiversity. This includes a collection of unique wildlife and avifauna such as the iconic Orangutans, Borneo Pygmy Elephants and the Rhinoceros Hornbills. It was initially proposed that that 60,000 ha of land was to be gazetted for conservation, but the pressure was too great that finally 30,000 ha, which was only half of the proposed land area was gazetted. The land was divided into ten lots, all of which are not contiguous and are separated by gaps, leaving it hard for elephants and other wildlife to move freely between them.
