Three Locals Sent for Nature Guide Course
After six years of operation, Sukau Rainforest Lodge has finally produced three local Orang Sungai nature guides. Herman Bin Abang, Jaini Ahmad and Sugaiman Sugiat joined Sukau Rainforest Lodge as General workers between 1995 and 1999. With in house training and courses in English, they have been able to upgrade their skills before they were recently sent for a three weeks course on nature guiding in Kota Kinabalu. The scholarship costing a total of RM6,167.40 including lodging, meals and course fee was sponsored by SERDC. Sukau Rainforest Lodge set aside US$1 per international tourist that stays at the lodge for SERDC’s various projects. As of 1st October 2001, Sukau Rainforest Lodge employs fourteen full time staff out of which eleven or 80% of them are locals.
