Kids are enjoying Reading Bus Program

BEST Society, Skycommunity, Sabah State Health, Kota Belud Dental Department, Borneo Eco Tours and Camp Lemaing held a joint community health programme at Kiau Village on 21st March 2015. Approximately 150 and 40 visitors received medical and dental treatment, respectively.

This programme, the fifth joint medical mission for BEST Society, Skycommunity, Sabah State Health and Borneo Eco Tours since 2010 included services such as basic medical screening, dental examinations and treatment and eye, ear and nose examination. There were also reading bus programme to introduce and encourage the local kids to learn English and dispensing toothbrush to them.

In this programme, 43 volunteers including nine doctors, a nurse, three dentists, four dental assistants, a nutritionist, a paediatrician, a pharmacist and general volunteers participated in offering free services to all, irrespective of race and religion. Among the doctors, two specially flew in from Peninsular Malaysia while another 10 were from Egypt.

Nancy Anis, volunteer from Egypt, first timer in Sabah enjoyed her experience here in Sabah while serving the people.

Mr. Joseph Gimbu, the village headman of Kg. Kiau Nuluh, said this kind of activity will enhance and continue the good relationship between parties, the community and volunteers and he look forward for future medical camp. He said the dental treatment is important as currently they have to travel approximately 73km from their village to the nearest hospital at Kota Belud to receive the treatment.

“The medical and dental visit to this village was an opportunity for the villagers to have proper medical attention and to know exactly their health condition”, said Martin Moguring, one of the organisers from Kiau Village.

 A total of RM 6,573.50 was spent for this project which included logistic, meals for volunteers and compliment stay for 24 volunteers at Camp Lemaing. BEST Society contributed RM 1,533.50, Borneo Eco Tours (RM 1,800) and Camp Lemaing sponsored two days one night stay which worth RM 3,240. Skycommunity sponsored the drugs and medicines (RM 7,250.00) and co-ordinated the volunteers from Skycommunity, St. Paul Coptic Medical Mission-Egypt, government hospitals, private clinics and private sectors.
