Borneo Ecotourism Solutions & Technologies (BEST) Society

formerly known as Sukau Ecotourism Research and Development (SERDC)

Dear Eco-Travellers, friends and partners,

Selamat Datang (Welcome) to Sabah!

Welcome to our new website which sets out to explain the history of Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) Society, and what we do for the local communities and environment.

From a humble beginning in 1995 when we started doing community project in Kudat under Borneo Eco Tours and later through Sukau Ecotourism Research & Development Centre (SERDC) in Sukau before we registered with the Registrar of Societies in 2006, we have extended our area of coverage from Kudat to Sukau, Pitas, Sikuati, Kimihang, Terongkongan and more recently to Kundasang areas.

Over the years, the projects we have implemented include among others, tree planting, supply of water tanks to villagers in Sukau, Dandun, Lugu, medical camps in Sukau, Abai, Bilit, Dandun, Mantanani, community based ecotourism lodge in Bavanggazo, virgin coconut oil branding and packaging in Kimihang, and organic farming at Rampai Besar in Sikuati. Our latest project is a community based ecotourism camp/ecolodge in Kiau Nuluh.

Among the donors were Rotary Clubs, Lions Club, GEF/SGP, EAC, Conoco Philips, and Shell Malaysia. Since its early days, we have shifted our focus from charity and welfare projects to projects that provide social entrepreneurship through capacity building and leadership development of the local community.

I would like to thank all our advisors, sponsors and volunteers for your contribution to the environment and the local communities of the Lower Kinabatangan River, Kundasang and Kudat.

We look forward to exciting times ahead for BEST Society as we move forward with a number of thrilling projects as we continue to expand the scope of our activities in Sabah.

I have been inspired by the quotes below from Professor Klaus Schwab and hope you will want to become partners with us to help the local community and environment when you visit SABAH with us.

"In our interdependent world, you can't afford to let people lose out in pursuit of a decent life. Everyone must be a winner" - Professor Klaus Schwab

"We deeply believe that economic as well as social progress can best be achieved through entrepreneurship". Professor Klaus Schwab Co-Founder, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship

Sincerely Yours,

Director,
