2014: Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards (Finalist for “Most Inspiring Responsible Tourism Initiatives”)

The Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards are based on the UNWTO Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. BEST Society emerged as one of the finalist for “Most Inspiring Responsible Tourism Initiatives”. This award recognizes grass-roots initiatives championing responsible tourism within their destination.

2013: UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Non-Governmental Organizations

The UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation merit distinction in four categories (Public Policy and Governance, Enterprises, Non-Governmental Organizations, Research and Technology) for the significant contribution of innovative tourism initiatives which are both competitive and sustainable in their character. Nominees shall have been highly inspirational and have made a significant impact on the tourism sector which can be replicated.

BEST Society was awarded the UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Non-Governmental Organizations- an initiative managed by a non-governmental organization is highly inspirational using innovation, partnership, governance, or civil society actions as key factors for its achievements.

Borneo Ecotourism Solutions and Technologies (BEST) has a long history of working towards the creation of community based tourism programmes that have a positive impact in local communities. "From Charity to Social Entrepreneurship is a successful attempt to move away from a charity mentality in the development world to one that empowers communities for the long term". The organization develops ecotourism projects with a social entrepreneurship approach that has increased the contribution of tourism as a tool for poverty alleviation in Malaysia. Stakeholders’ collaboration, capacity building, community development and environmental conservation are at the forefront of the BEST model."
